Internships and Volunteering

TookerInternships (AH399). Internships allow students with substantial experience in art history (normally juniors and seniors) to gain professional skills and connections in art-related organizations such as museums, galleries, auction houses, and arts councils. This privilege offers opportunities for exceptionally motivated students who work well independently and involves special responsibilities for you, your internship supervisor, and your faculty sponsor. Be sure to plan well in advance and approach your prospective supervisor and sponsor with a thoughtful proposal for a specific experience. Note: only three credits can count toward your art history major.

Art history majors have interned at institutions that include the following: Art in General, New York; Chesterwood, Stockbridge, MA; DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA; The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY; Lake George Arts Project, Lake George, NY; Jewish Museum, New York; Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Art and Design, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of African Art (Smithsonian), Washington, D. C.; Neuberger Art Museum, Purchase, NY; New York Public Library, New York; Saratoga County Arts Council, New York; Schick Art Gallery, 91福利社; Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, 91福利社

Volunteering. Non-credit, unpaid work can be a valuable learning experience, networking opportunity, and qualification for subsequent internships and jobs. You are encouraged to pursue volunteer opportunities at art-related organizations such as museums, art galleries, and community centers with arts programs.
